TEIA Sailing Adventure Week: June 22-26, 2026

Ages 8 to Adult | Monday - Friday | 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Sailing Adventure Week is a NEW pre-season program for our community of sailors (of all abilities) to experience a week of FULL-DAY sailing adventures!  We will learn and review rigging, steering, tacking, jibing, general boat handling and seamanship as we adventure around Peaks Island and Casco Bay.

Depending on enrollment, we will sail all the boats in our fleet: Optis, 420s, the Tanzer keelboat and two new Rhodes 19 daysailers. We will do some destination sailing each day, likely to Long Island to visit Singing Sands Beach and Byer’s Bakehouse or to each of the three lighthouses and then anchor at Fort Gorges for a picnic and to explore the historic fortress. Depending on the weather we will plan new adventures each day. Wednesday will be an optional race day for those who are excited to try beginning fun races or do some more serious 420 fleet racing. Come with a friend or family member or come on to meet other sailing enthusiasts.

Designed to bring together experienced sailors and those just learning the ropes, racers and day-cruisers, the young and the young-at-heart, we hope to strengthen our Peaks Island sailing community by offering a unique opportunity for inter-generational fun and exploration of the treasure that is Casco Bay!

Cost: $500 per sailor.

Sign up Early! Enrollment is limited.

Share the fun of summer and learn skills for a lifetime!

TEIA is proud to continue a long tradition of teaching islanders and visitors the joys and skills of sailing on Casco Bay. Children, teens and adults can learn the basics of sailing and water safety, enjoy cruising and smart seamanship, and experience the thrill of friendly competition. Our fleet includes 14 Optis, eight 420s, two Open Bics, a couple of Lasers and a larger Tanzer keelboat.

Opti Classes

Registration is open to beginner, intermediate, and racing sailors between the ages of 8 and 13 to sail four days per week over seven weeks. Emphasis will be on destination sailing, seamanship, and sail trim. Students must be comfortable in the ocean water and take a  swim test the length of the 20-foot dock without a flotation device. They may wear a wetsuit, if desired.

420 Sailing Classes

Registration is open to beginner, intermediate, and racing sailors between the ages of 12 and 18 to sail four days per week. Students will learn to rig and sail a double-handed 420 sloop, learn to tack and jibe, sail upwind, and master boat handling skills. Emphasis will be on destination sailing, beginner racing, seamanship, and sail trim. Students are required to swim the length of the 40-foot dock without a flotation device and then put on a lifejacket while treading water.

Racing

Youth racing classes are exciting and fun! The 420 and Opti racing teams will be practicing four days a week with our coaches at TEIA and in addition they will be traveling on Wednesdays traveling regularly to local Maine/NH regattas by land and by sea. We also encourage 420 racers to join some of our sailing committee members on their keelboats in local Casco Bay races this summer – they are looking for an enthusiastic crew!  Racing schedule and events will be announced at a family race meeting in the first week of sailing.

Campership opportunities for full-time Peaks Island residents are arranged through Friends of TEIA. Please contact the Chairperson of Friends of TEIA, Gail Kelly, for more information and registration: friendsofteia@gmail.com

TEIA memberships are required to participate; register here for memberships and programs. Please email Sailing Director Liz Rollins at TEIAsailing@gmail.com if you have any questions about what class for which your child should be registered.

Important Information

  • Emergency contacts, medical information, and sailing class liability waivers must be signed online by the junior sailor’s parent/guardian before their first class.

  • A mandatory basic swim test must be passed on the first day.

  • Students must bring their own US Coast Guard-approved lifejacket with whistle attached, closed-toed shoes, foul weather gear, sunscreen, and a water bottle.

  • Classes will run rain or shine, but students will remain on shore in dangerous weather.*

  • All students are expected to follow instructor directions, show respect for others (and equipment), and always handle themselves with control. Discipline issues create serious safety issues on the water, and students who cannot comply with these rules will be asked to leave the program without a refund.

*Note – In the event of very severe weather predictions, classes may possibly be canceled in advance of a storm. Please check your email for updates, and do not send kids down to TEIA alone without checking in.
